Men in the United States are being asked to pay a higher price for their Viagra Connect tablets this month as theyopic their sexual health, a new survey has found.

The price jump was particularly worrying as the cost of the medication has risen by more than 80 per cent since the drug was launched in 1998.

A survey conducted by the National Health and Nutrition Association found that 25 per cent of men had reported taking Viagra Connect at some point in their lives, and that only a quarter had taken the medication.
"Viagra Connect is an important part of treating impotence, and it has been used for a number of years as an effective treatment," said study co-author Dr. Steven Nissen, director of the American Society for Sexual Medicine and the study's principal investigator.
"We're seeing a rise in people taking the erectile dysfunction drug to the point where they are talking to their doctors about it."
The new study, conducted by the University of Chicago's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is the first study to examine the long-term cost of Viagra Connect — a prescription-only drug for men — and compare it to the cost of generic Viagra.
"This is a new type of study," Nissen said.
"In this study, we found that the cost of Viagra Connect — the most expensive ED drug — rose by nearly 80 per cent, while the cost of generic Viagra fell to $7.50 per 100 milligram tablet, but the price of Viagra Connect (the generic version of Viagra) went up to $15, versus the $7.50 price of generic Viagra."
The new findings come just two years after the Food and Drug Administration approved sildenafil, the generic form of Viagra, for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing for increased blood flow and resulting in an erection.
Viagra has been a tried-and-true treatment for impotence since 1998, when it was introduced for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
